Archaeological Museum of Aghios Nikolaos
The Museum of Aghios Nikolaos was founded in 1970 to house the numerous new archaeological finds from eastern Crete, which until then, were housed in the Museum of Heraklion.
Its collections include:
- Finds from the Early Minoan (3000-2000 BC) cemetery at Agia Photia of Sitia
- Finds from the Early Minoan II settlement at Fournou Koryfi of Myrtos
- Finds from the Early Minoan II-III (2600-2200 BC) cemetery on the islet of Mochlos
- Finds from Middle Minoan (2000-1550 BC) peak sanctuaries: Petsophas, Modi, Traostalos, Kalamaki, Prinias, Etiani, Kephala
- Finds from the Late Minoan III (1400-1200 BC) tombs of Milatos and Kritsa
- Finds from the Geometric deposit at Anavlochos Vrachasiou.
- Finds from the Daidalic deposit at Sitia (beginning of 7th c BC)
- Finds from the Archaic deposit at Olous (end of 7th-6th c BC)
- Finds from Lato - Kamara (modern Agios Nikolaos) dated to Greek and Roman times.
Archaeological Museum of Ierapetra
The museum was founded at the end of the 19th century during the Turkish occupation of Crete and was housed in several buildings in the past. Today it is housed in the building of the Commercial Ottoman School, protected by a preservation order, and is under the Ministry of Culture by the Municipality of Ierapetra.
The collections include:
- Minoan art: painted sarcophagi, lamps, Late Minoan III (1400-1200 BC) vases, mostly stirrup jars and craters.
- Geometric figurines and vases (9th-8th century BC)
- Archaic art (mostly figurines and relief plaques) of the late 7th-6th c BC.
- Classical and Hellenistic vases and figurines (end of 1st c BC - 4th c AD)
- Roman reliefs and statues
- Funerary and votive inscriptions of Greek and Roman times
Archaeological Collection of Neapolis
The Archaeological Collection of Neapolis was created before World War II and within two years included around 1,000 items, found mostly in the area of Mirambello and on other sites of the Prefecture. During the Italian rule, thanks to the efforts of Emm. Mavroeidis (then curator of Antiquities) the Collection was protected in the underground cellar of the Club. Today, it is housed in a building under the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Health and the Municipality. The Collection is temporarily closed to the public.
It includes:
- Finds from the excavations of the French School of Archaeology at Elounda (1937)
- Finds from the excavations of the French School of Archaeology at Hellenika (1937)
- Finds from the excavations of the French School of Archaeology at Dreros (1937)
- Finds from the excavations of Emm. Mavroeidis of a Late Minoan tomb in Tourloti, near Sitia
- Finds from the excavations of Emm. Mavroeidis of a Hellenistic tomb at Kalo Chorio (ancient Istrona)
- Finds from the area of Mirambello, collected or given to the Commission
- Antiquities collected by the Italian forces from Agios Nikolaos (ancient Lato - Kamara) and other areas of the Prefecture
- Numismatic collection (coins given by citizens)
Archaeological Museum of Sitia
The Archaeological Museum of Sitia contains the most important finds from eastern Crete. Apart from the exhibition halls, the Museum has storerooms and workshops, as well as offices for scholars and staff.
The explanatory labels of the exhibited finds are written in five languages. The Museum opened to the public in 1984 and is going to be enlarged soon.
