The Prefecture of Chania is located to the west of the island offering long sandy beaches with clean blue waters. In contrast, the backdrop of the White Mountains home to the Samaria Gorge, famed for its natural beauty and the longest gorge in Europe at 18 km. The main town of Chania is bustling with activity.
The Prefecture of Rethymnon is home to the mountain range of Psiloritis, the highest peak of the island. The main town of Rethymnon has an old town with many fish tavernas and bars overlooking the fishing harbour and Venetian Fortress. On its south coast is the resort area of Agia Galini and close by the Monasteries of Prevali and Archadia. Every part of this island offers breathtaking natural rugged scenery and sandy beaches lapped by clear blue sea.
The Prefecture of Heraklion is located in the centre of the island and houses the capital city of the island with many museums, archaeological sites and steeped in history. The Minoan Palace of Knossos is just a few kilometres to the south of Heraklion and the Palace of Malia to the east. The finds of these palaces and many others can be seen in the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion. With so much to see and do you will come back again and again just to do it all.

Archaeological Museum of Aghios Nikolaos

The Museum of Aghios Nikolaos was founded in 1970 to house the numerous new archaeological finds from eastern Crete, which until then, were housed in the Museum of Heraklion.
Its collections include:

  • Finds from the Early Minoan (3000-2000 BC) cemetery at Agia Photia of Sitia
  • Finds from the Early Minoan II settlement at Fournou Koryfi of Myrtos
  • Finds from the Early Minoan II-III (2600-2200 BC) cemetery on the islet of Mochlos
  • Finds from Middle Minoan (2000-1550 BC) peak sanctuaries: Petsophas, Modi, Traostalos, Kalamaki, Prinias, Etiani, Kephala
  • Finds from the Late Minoan III (1400-1200 BC) tombs of Milatos and Kritsa
  • Finds from the Geometric deposit at Anavlochos Vrachasiou.
  • Finds from the Daidalic deposit at Sitia (beginning of 7th c BC)
  • Finds from the Archaic deposit at Olous (end of 7th-6th c BC)
  • Finds from Lato - Kamara (modern Agios Nikolaos) dated to Greek and Roman times.

Archaeological Museum of Ierapetra

The museum was founded at the end of the 19th century during the Turkish occupation of Crete and was housed in several buildings in the past. Today it is housed in the building of the Commercial Ottoman School, protected by a preservation order, and is under the Ministry of Culture by the Municipality of Ierapetra.
The collections include:

  • Minoan art: painted sarcophagi, lamps, Late Minoan III (1400-1200 BC) vases, mostly stirrup jars and craters.
  • Geometric figurines and vases (9th-8th century BC)
  • Archaic art (mostly figurines and relief plaques) of the late 7th-6th c BC.
  • Classical and Hellenistic vases and figurines (end of 1st c BC - 4th c AD)
  • Roman reliefs and statues
  • Funerary and votive inscriptions of Greek and Roman times

Archaeological Collection of Neapolis

The Archaeological Collection of Neapolis was created before World War II and within two years included around 1,000 items, found mostly in the area of Mirambello and on other sites of the Prefecture. During the Italian rule, thanks to the efforts of Emm. Mavroeidis (then curator of Antiquities) the Collection was protected in the underground cellar of the Club. Today, it is housed in a building under the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Health and the Municipality. The Collection is temporarily closed to the public.
It includes:

  • Finds from the excavations of the French School of Archaeology at Elounda (1937)
  • Finds from the excavations of the French School of Archaeology at Hellenika (1937)
  • Finds from the excavations of the French School of Archaeology at Dreros (1937)
  • Finds from the excavations of Emm. Mavroeidis of a Late Minoan tomb in Tourloti, near Sitia
  • Finds from the excavations of Emm. Mavroeidis of a Hellenistic tomb at Kalo Chorio (ancient Istrona)
  • Finds from the area of Mirambello, collected or given to the Commission
  • Antiquities collected by the Italian forces from Agios Nikolaos (ancient Lato - Kamara) and other areas of the Prefecture
  • Numismatic collection (coins given by citizens)

Archaeological Museum of Sitia

The Archaeological Museum of Sitia contains the most important finds from eastern Crete. Apart from the exhibition halls, the Museum has storerooms and workshops, as well as offices for scholars and staff.

The explanatory labels of the exhibited finds are written in five languages. The Museum opened to the public in 1984 and is going to be enlarged soon.

The Prefecture of Lassithi is located at the eastern end of the island, home to Agios Nikolaos, the exclusive resort of Elounda and the island of Spinalonga. The picturesque fishing harbour of Agios Nikolaos has many tavernas and bars surrounding its inner lake. The palm beach at Vai gives the impression of being on a tropical island, is well worth a visit. The archaeological sites of the Minoan Palace of Phaistos and Gournia can be found to the south on the way to Ierapetra, the most southern town in Europe.
